SUNDAY OCTOBER 7
SHELTON DAY Festivities in downtown Shelton to celebrate our city
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 24
PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
Your Association continues to make significant progress. The committees have been working very hard in each of their individual areas. The big event coming up is the CANDIDATES NIGHT. This is the most important event of this year and your presence at this debate is needed. The only way we can have influence at the Town Hall, is to show we are united and will go to the voting poles.
The WASHINGTON TRIP was an outstanding success. Everyone had a great time and are already asking for us to plan another trip.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
SPECIAL EVENTS AND FUND RAISING CHAIRMAN Christina Santos
SHELTON DAY this is an all day feast for the entire family. There are rides and entertainment for the children and many food venders with varieties of food. This year, for the first time, the Portuguese community will be participating in the festivities. The Shelton PCA will have two tents. In one, we will have information about our association. It will be our first introduction of us to the entire Shelton community. In the second tent, we will have Portuguese food and pastries for your enjoyment.
Bring your families and friends, enjoy our Portuguese food, meet other Portuguese families living in Shelton and have some fun. MEMBERSHIP AND CIVIC PARTICIPATION CHAIRMAN Sandra Ramalhete
CANDIDATES NIGHT this event is of extreme importance to the Shelton Portuguese Community. Until now, our government representatives paid no attention to the more than 500 Portuguese families living in Shelton. They don't even know we exist. If we expect to be recognized as an integral part of the community and expect help when needed from Town Hall, then, we must fulfill our obligation by becoming involved and participating in local elections.
The debate on Wednesday October 24, between the Mayor and his Democratic challenger, is only for our Portuguese Community. Therefore, your presence at this debate is needed. This is our opportunity to show our government representatives that we exist, we count, and we matter.
The audience will have the opportunity to write down questions that they may wish to ask the candidates. The questions will be given to one of the moderators and he or she will decide which questions to ask. All your Alderman Representatives have also been invited to be present but will not debate. You will have the opportunity to personally meet the candidates after the debate over coffee and pastries.
Anyone that is not a citizen or is not registered to vote and would like to do so, please let us know and we will assist you. Voting is a privilege and a duty. We encourage everyone able to do so.
EDUCATION CHAIRMAN Elsa Cardoso
Portuguese Level II classes - Intermediate - will start October 23. Classes will be in the evening from 6:30 to 8:30 in the school building next to our Lady of Fatima Church. At this level, the students will also be given the opportunity to attend cultural and leisure activities so that they can get to know the language, the culture and the Portuguese People better.
The committee is also planning visits to museums and other cultural institutions around the country. We will try to make each visit not only a time of leisure but also a learning opportunity. We are also attempting to get video on Portuguese historical sites and landmarks.
On September 1, 2, and 3 we took a group of 55 people to Washington, DC. The visit was an incredible and memorable experience! We prepared an itinerary highlighting many of the most popular, historic, and cultural attractions. We visited the Portuguese exhibition Encompassing the Globe: Portugal and the World in the 16th and 17th Centuries, which explores the artistic achievements that flourished when the Portuguese sailors exposed new, creative techniques and imagery to the world as they transported goods from port to port. The exhibition presents approximately 250 objects produced by each of the cultures touched by Portugal's early trade routes.
Everyone who participated in the trip was so pleased that they are asking for a repeat! My committee and I are already preparing other tips to other important places in the U.S. We'll keep you informed. If you have any place you would like to visit please let us know.
